Tonight we had math night at school for third grade. They use a new program called everyday math. It is really different than what was taught even when I was in school. I would explain it, but I don't get it. Counting to the 100's to do addition. Or counting in their places. AHHH I was confused. So an addition problem could be
426
+ 130
______
500
50
6
______
556
Or you could have to count up. Which I really didnt get at ALLLLLL! I always struggled in math though, still do. Anyway, none of this is my point. I talked to Sophie's teacher a bit afterwards to ask her which method (algerithiam) she was using. I never see her work she does most of it in her head. Oddly, she is using the old fashioned way of borrowing! LOL. Well, her teacher kept going on and on about how great she is doing. How she picks things up so quickly. When they do a lesson, and she knows it already, she will put her on the computer to do higher things. How she now has her helping ( teaching) other students who are not picking it up. And how I should just be really proud because she is so special, and really is on an entire other level of thinking if she can TEACH other kids how to do things. This is like the BEST thing for us. Teachers in the past have just tried to tell me she has ADHD and have me put her on meds. When all along I KNEW she was just gifted. I could not have picked a better teacher for her. A lot of friends questioned my request. Why I was'nt requesting the "best" third grade teacher. Mommy gut told me this is where she needed to be. I just wanted to share how AWESOME soph is doing, and how we have a great teacher who finally realizes her potential!!!!!!
